Mochvara Gallery in Zagreb presents from Wednesday, April 5, 2017 an ambisonic 3D sound composition called "Evacuation Plan" by Croatian artist Toni Meštrović. The subject of the artist’s acoustic exploration is Tijat, Jadrolinija’s passenger ferry built in 1955. „The main characteristics of this ferry“, says Meštrović, „include a one-propeller engine, a large chimney in the middle, above the engine room, and an architecture that resounds with the roars of the machine, the sounds which spread from every opening, each in its own way. All segments of the powerful sound of the engine are compacted. They reverberate through the space of the ferry and, like the sounds of an orchestra, they are received as a whole.” Using different microphones, Toni Meštrović immerses the listener into a multidimensional experiential vortex of the Tijat ferry as it travels on its Dalmatian route: Šibenik – Zlarin – Prvić Luka – Šepurine – Vodice. Microphones are set up in many locations in, on and around the ship: field mics sample the atmosphere on deck and in the engine room, contact mics record the vibration of sound waves passing through metal walls and floors, and hydrophones sunk underwater record the ship’s arrival and departure, along with plankton hitting the sensors of the actual recording instrument. The visitors find themselves in different places at the same time, in the hull of the ship, on its surfaces and the surfaces of the sea which this ship touches while sailing; below and above the water level, within the engine, within the metal, in the water, in the wave. This experience of immersion into the sounds of the ferry, the shipyard, waiting rooms, stone houses, islands and salt brings both turbulence as well as an even measured, tranquil tone. Evacuation Plan is, so to speak, an evacuation of ferry sounds from Tijat, one of the last ferries of its kind, and one which is soon to sail on its very last journey. After the opening accompanied by an artist talk session, the exhibition stays opened until April 8th 2017.
Toni Meštrović, born 1973 in Split, Croatia, graduated with a Graphic Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1999, where he produced graphic arts, sculpture and installation. Due to his interest in electronic audiovisual media, he studied Video/Digital Imaging at the International Summer Academy for Contemporary Art in Salzburg in 1997, and completed a two-year postgraduate diploma in Media Art at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne in 2004. Video, sound and audiovisual installations produced during Meštrović’s postgraduate studies explore his personal perception of the sea, and the island where he grew up. Upon his return to Croatia, his work deals with themes of cultural heritage, identity and the changes that have occurred in Dalmatia due to the period of transition. Since 1992, he has taken part in group and solo shows, as well as video festivals. He lives in Rijeka and Kaštela, and teaches at the Arts Academy University of Split, Department of Film and Video.

The sound of chemical gardens in Mochvara Gallery
The seventh annual sound art programme in Zagreb's Mochvara Gallery starts with a team of artists: Robertina Šebjanič, Aleš Hieng – Zergon and Ida Hiršenfelder. Their installation "Time Displacement / Chemobrionic Garden" opens on Monday, March 20th, 2017 and is accompanied with an artist talk session. It stays open for visitors on March 21st and 22nd, 2017, from 5.00 to 8.00 p.m. in the large hall of Pogon Jedinstvo, Trnjanski nasip bb.
Ida Hiršenfelder describes that the core proposition of this piece is to create a situation in which the growth of chemical structures takes the centre stage. The human expectations are put in the background in order to stimulate a state of altered listening in which one is exposed to the geological passage of time. Passage of time from human point of view and in relation to geological time is the basis for authors' questioning of the anthropocentric perspective. Arranging a series of chemical gardens full of growing crystals, shapes and colours, Slovene authors explore also the evolution of sound as well as principles of hydrothermal chemistry, offering insight into chemical processes from the very beginning of life on Earth. The gardens are in the state of perpetual change of colour and shape; these changes are detected by the camera, transmitted into a computer programme and translated into changes of the sound. The changes in sound created by the gardens are a portrait of the geological time – slow and inconspicuous, evading the range of human perception.

EXTRAVAGANT BODIES: Crime and punishment

Beginning with the question what is outside the norm, the project “Extravagant Bodies” interrogates the social determination of borders between societal norms and the pathological – from corporeality and appearances to behaviour, sexuality, and life style. Physical handicap, mental health and social implications of the elderly have each marked a former edition of this international, trans-disciplinary triennial art festival since 2007. Extravagant Bodies is organisaed by Zagreb-based Kontejner | bureau of contemporary art praxis.
The upcoming, fourth edition of the festival broadly approaches the socially prescribed morality and examines crime as indicative of all the cracks of social repression. “Extravagant bodies: Crime and punishment” takes as its topic the social, legislative, scientific and ideological constructions of criminality and social norms that delineate criminal from non-criminal behavior. Ideological presuppositions behind the social and legal regulations of criminality, everyday abuse of common assets, how society deals with free information, the body and sexuality are just few of the subjects problematized.
The exhibition will take place in the large hall of Pogon Jedinstvo (Zagreb/HR) from November 18th to 25th 2016 while the performances, curated in collaboration with festival partner KIOSK, will take place in Belgrade Youth Center (Belgrade/RS) on 20th and 21st of November 2016.
