The unique unit of the interactive sound installation NEW EUROPE consists of three works of art, three separate installations in the shape of a two-metre high cube covered in silver and gold foil on which there are geomorphic reliefs with natural minerals from the Earth: gold pyrite (FeS2), lead sulphide (PbS) and zinc sulphide or sphalerite (ZnS), which with their chemical composition are the roots of the civilisation of today’s world. Through the artistic prism of intuitive perception and factual scientific analysis, NEW EUROPE presents the phenomenon of dark matter and the phenomenon of Change as an absolute constant in the Universe, in two material forms: audible (the sounds of three different minerals) and visual (two diptychs and one triptych). Change is transformation, a universal, natural phenomenon, and a component part of the cyclical creation and evolution of the Universe, space and species. It has no shelf life, because it belongs to the phenomenon of the constant.
The installation has associations with current changes in society and humanity and represents omnipresent, universal Change. It exists without any labels of good or bad and is inescapable in relation with dark matter. A change in its structure belongs to an absolute constant and does not alter notwithstanding changes of conditions. It has a constant value like the speed of light, the gravitational constant and Planck’s constant h {bar} in the framework of the interpretation of the radiation of a black body, in the study of the behaviour of electrons and other elementary particles in atoms, molecules and crystals.
In association with the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, quantum mechanics has been employed, the method of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), which deals with the study of particles, the determination of chemical composition and crystallographic characteristics, and the method of high-resolution scanning electron microscope for the analysis of materials. All three minerals were analysed for crystal density with X-rays. The results obtained were used for further processing of the information into sound and in this way an invisible dimension, the sound of minerals, was extracted.
