MR-808, a mechanical robotic installation by Moritz Simon Geist, uses programmed robotic structures to create sound. It is a replica of the famous 1980s electronic drum machine TR-808 and the first robotic installation that transfers and presents the electronic sound of this most influential electronic drum computer. By using robots to create sound, the artist operates the installation in his live performance so as to highlight the origin of sounds in a way no conventional media would be able to. This is done via physical movements of the drum robot parts, and lights that synchronize with the sound. Thus, the installation introduces a physical error into the music: a drum beaten by a mechanical robot arm can never be as predictable as a computer-generated sound.

Moritz Simon Geist (b. 1981), German artist focusing on performances with musical robots. His projects range from tonal hacking to robotics and automated robotic instruments, adding a new perspective to the “man-machine interface”. However, his installations go beyond the basic physical and technical demand: the main theme is rather the transition from a deterministic (usually binary) system into the physical and mechanical world. This transformation entails a greater emphasis on the “error” of the physical world and allows the object be more tangible and more vulnerable at the same time. Geist has presented his projects at various festivals and exhibitions, such as Ars Electronica 2014 (AT), Club Transmediale 2013 (DE), and Mapping Festival [CH]. He has collaborated with Mouse on Mars and Tyondai Braxton, and is part of the robotic sound collective Sonic Robots. He lives and works in Dresden, Germany.

Josef Klammer (AT): Drumming Is an Elastic Concept

Drumming Is an Elastic Concept, a staged concert for percussion and electronics by the Austrian artist Josef Klammer. His first full-length solo program “Trommeln ist ein dehnbarer Begriff” (Drumming Is an Elastic Concept) is an anthology of his intensive efforts and their realization under the direction (stage design) of Ernst M. Binder. The project’s title is based on the Kunstradio broadcast “Membran”, which Klammer created live together with Seppo Gründler for the Austrian national radio station Ö1 in 2008. Instead of the usual plastic drumheads, Klammer used latex skins. As a result, the drumbeats were slowed down and stretched, until only the “breathing” of the drum was audible. Thus, the title not only stands for the visual illustration of the process, but also as a metaphor for the adaptation and enhancement of instruments by using analog and digital aids.

Josef Klammer, Austrian musician and media artist, since the mid-1980s continuously working on the tonal enhancement of his instrumentarium, as well as the exploration and transformation of media-immanent music potentials. Klammer has presented exhibitions, sound installations, and music projects in Vienna, Hong Kong, Seville, New York, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Darmstadt, Katzow, Rimini, and Paris. He has composed music for TV and movies; radio plays and radio programs for the ORF (Austrian Broadcast Corporation); and stage music for theatre productions in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Schwerin, Gera, Ljubljana, Klagenfurt, Linz, and Graz. He performs with a wide variety of ensembles playing new, improvised electronic and experimental music, and is the curator of diverse festivals and inventive music projects and workshops in schools. In 2015, he received the Award of Distinction for the project “Drumming Is an Elastic Concept” at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.

Nera Miočić (HR): Audible / Edible Kitchen

Audible / Edible Kitchen, interactive audio cooking performance by a young Croatian artist Nera Miočić; an ambiental experience of food that experiments with breaking free from the boundaries of traditional recipes. Based on the premise that organisms vibrate at specific frequencies – the human body vibrates on a frequency between 62 and 72 Hz, and each living ingredient also has its own frequency, a soundscape is created by the frequencies of the ingredients used in the performance.
The space is filled with melodic frequencies of ingredients, trees, the sounds of food being prepared on the spot in front of the audience, sand, light and other elements. The artist caters to all of our senses in a predominantly artificial environment created through communication between her and the visitors. The audience bring their own food and enjoy the meals that are prepared, while the preparation of food and feeding turns into communication: a transmission of one's own energy and reception of someone else's energy depending on the natural intelligence of our bodies.

Nera Miočić, finished her studies at the Academy of Arts in Split in 2010, at the Film and Video Department. She creates films, installations, artist books and performances. She is currently a student of the graduate programme at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb at the Department of Animation and New Media. She has taken part in many film and art projects and exhibited at several group exhibitions and public performances in Zagreb, Split, Belgrade and London. Within the scope of the projects she has worked on, she has organized interactive and educational workshops for film, video and sound.
